At Great Lakes Grappling - Black Tie BJJ, we welcome athletes of all experience levels. Our curriculum focuses on competitive, modern grappling heavily influenced by wrestling.

For those interested in self-defense, we believe that highly competitive grappling skills provide the most tested and effective approach. Our instruction combines the Constraint-Led Approach (CLA) with direct technical instruction.

CLA involves various games where grapplers are given specific tasks and the freedom to solve them creatively. By providing specific objectives and limitations, students develop an intuitive understanding of positions and submissions.

While CLA is excellent for building situational awareness, it is most effective when paired with direct instruction. Once a student is introduced to a new position or concept, we use direct instruction to teach precise technical solutions to specific problems.

Having a coach with a deep technical understanding of both wrestling and grappling (BJJ) enables athletes to develop their understanding and skills at a much faster pace. Please check out the YouTube video below.

Hope to see you on the mats -
